To start off our Narrative Project, We had to tell our story in 500 words or less and we called this short story a flashfiction. Our flashfiction would then serve as our base for all our future story formats.
The school year flew by like a breeze in the wind. Only a few days after summer began, Daryl found himself trying to focus in a hard plastic chair in the local mall manager’s blue waiting room. Daryl kept trying to focus on his up coming interview but found himself daydreaming about the new flagship jacket of Yeezy’s new fashion line that he saw on his way in . His own scuffy, poorly fitting jacket serving as a second reminder as to why he wanted this job.
The next day as Daryl entered the the mall, he was greeted with the sight of the jacket he saw the previous day. Only separated by a mirror that it hung behind, Daryl’s gaze dropped to his own drab clothes and he sighed. As he continued on his way to his new workplace, several other teenagers noticed him and motioned for him to join them. He smiles sadly, shakes his head and continues on his way.
The weeks of summer slowly disappear as Daryl goes to work everyday, seeing his dream jacket and occasionally declining invitations from his friends. On the bus going to work one day, Daryl looks out of the window. His eyes widen as he wonders when everything got started looking grey.
Finally, after months of working daily, Daryl did it. He finally saved up enough money to buy the jacket of his dreams. He triumphantly strolls into the Adidas store, gingerly pulls his jacket off its rack and purchases it.
When the moment of truth had arrived, Daryl pulled on his new jacket and admired himself in the mirror. Checking his phone, he saw a text from his good friend. A few minutes later, Daryl pulls up to the bus stop on his skateboard. As he moves to greet his friend, his jacket gets stuck on a lonesome twig hanging out.
As night falls on the deserted bus stop, the jacket lays on the bench abandoned.
